Welcome to the UNITY FLIGHT OF SOUTH AFRICA - Hospices

St Luke’s Hospice in Cape Town was the first hospice to be placed on the Ufosa list of beneficiaries, and Cape Town is the final stop on our 30 day trip across South Africa raising public awareness to help those in need.

Much focus in national and international fund-raising is given to the young. Ufosa wants also to do something to help the infirm and the elderly. As Robert Vallier says, “Assisting people as they start their journey of life is important, just as it is to assist people when they are coming to the end of their life's journey. It's all a part of the unity of living.”

Hospice is not a place but, rather, a philosophy of care and often taken to the patients wherever they are... at home, residential care, frail care, hospitals. It is a special kind of caring for patients and their loved ones, and includes the control of pain and other symptoms and emotional, social and spiritual problems. Palliative care is offered by a team comprising doctors, professional nurses, therapists, social workers, spiritual counsellors and volunteers.

Hospices are the only facilities in South Africa providing palliative care as defined by the world health organisation. Palliative care and the hospice movement started in the UK and many of the professional developments in palliative care have come from the management of patients with cancer . St Luke's Hospice provides palliative care to people who are approaching the end of their lives.

“Everyone has been touched by pain and bereavement of loved ones,” says Robert. “I remember the death of my own parents, and the slow painful death from cancer of my uncle, who was like a second father to me. I want Ufosa to ease some of this kind of suffering for people too, where we can; as well as helping those who are starting out in life.”
